How does the past relate to the present? On our history courses you’ll engage with the ideas and events that have shaped the modern world, with a particular focus on British, European and global history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Learning from published experts, you’ll explore a variety of theoretical perspectives and themes, including nationalism, imperialism, race, gender, orientalism, and globalisation.
As well as learning history through lectures and seminars, you’ll also learn on field trips to places such as Manchester People’s History Museum and the Museum of London. We also give you access to extensive archives and academic digital collections, and offer an optional work placement as part of our undergraduate programmes.

I completed my BA (2013) and MA (2014) in the History Department at the University of Sheffield, and my PhD (2018) here in the School of History at the University of Leeds (funded by WRoCAH). My research focuses on first encounters in the Americas (c. 1492-1550), exploring how indigenous groups and individuals responded to and identified Europeans in moments of early contact in the Caribbean and Mesoamerica. More broadly, my interests surround cultural encounters, the ‘white gods’, indigenous histories, concepts of space, and identity. I’m especially interested in cultural intermediaries, notions of ‘in-betweenness’, and methods for reading indigenous voices.
Any research projects I’m currently working on will be listed below. Our list of all research projects allows you to view and search the full list of projects in the faculty.
