The University’s Open Units scheme allows students on undergraduate degree programmes the opportunity to broaden their education by undertaking unit/s outside of their subject discipline. Under the scheme single honours students will normally be able to choose to undertake open unit/s of at least 20 credit points across the programme, except where this is not practicable. The year(s) of study in the programme in which a student can undertake open units will be determined by the academic school in which the degree is based.

We use the umbrella term higher education provider (HE provider) to describe the organisations we collect data from.

The University Air Squadron (UAS) offers a unique chance to sample RAF life. Our main role is to attract ambitious and intelligent students into a career as an RAF officer, but joining us doesn’t necessarily mean you have to join the RAF.
All UASs carry out selection interviews and fitness assessments prior to the candidate joining the squadron. Information on these will be available at recruitment events.

An international review of how policy, delivery and funding affect early learning and childcare provision.
This three-year research project, funded by the ESRC and the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) compares the use of school inspection as a form of governing of education in the three systems of Sweden, Scotland and England, in the context of current changes in inspection practices in Europe.

Education is crucially important for later outcomes but has received limited attention in comparative research on welfare states. In light of this, we present an exploratory analysis of education systems across fourteen EU countries and the US. This builds on existing work on educational institutions, educational outcomes and welfare regimes. We focus on institutional features associated with inequality of educational opportunity, including academic selection, tracking and public/private provision; on educational outcomes; and on education expenditure. Our quantitative analysis identifies four clusters of countries: the Nordic, Continental, Mediterranean and English-speaking, which bear similarities to those identified in the welfare states literature. Each ‘education regime’ is associated with particular institutional features, educational outcomes and levels of public expenditure. Our analysis suggests that further comparative research on education, viewed as a key component of the welfare state, is warranted.
